The Riley Report
The $38 Billion Blunder
By George A. Riley, Ph.D., contributing editor
Lead-free compliance has cost the electronics industry more than $38 billion to date, a total increasing by $3.7 billion annually, according to a survey of the economic impact of the RoHS directive on the electronics industry. This is nearly double the estimate of $20 billion commonly quoted by non-enthusiasts, and minimized by proponents.

Hitting the Fast Track
by Françoise von Trapp, managing editor
Five silicon startups were introduced to the industry at the recent (May 9) Born Global! event in Bath UK as part of Silicon Southwest's FASTtrack program, set-up a year ago to address the strategy gap early startups experience due to intensive early R&D that can inhibit interaction with potential customers and partners who are vital in shaping successful business strategies.

UK Event Advises Semi Startups
By Françoise von Trapp, managing editor
Traveling through the New Forest in Dorset, UK, where wild ponies graze by the roadside and stroll untended down village streets, to the medieval city of Bath, it's hard to believe this southwest corner of the country is a high-tech haven recognized as a European center for silicon design. Government-funded and private research initiatives, network organizations, and university collaborations are helping to accelerate growth in this region.

Standardization of Automotive MEMS Sensor Tests
Cost Pressure Switches from Consumer to Automotive Applications
By Andreas Nagy, Multitest
For every semiconductor company, final test and quality control adds cost without adding additional functional value to their product. That is why cost of test is constantly under pressure. In the early days of MEMS, cost-per-unit were not considered that critical, as MEMS prices were sometimes lower then traditional sensor prices by a factor of 100.

Wet Copper Seed Deposition Process Spells the End for PVD in TSV Construction
By Steve Lerner, CEO, Alchimer
It seems hard to believe that in just half a century the semiconductor industry has emerged from obscurity to become a key indicator for global economic prosperity. In that time it has developed a cyclic nature; periods of high growth followed by periods of low (or even negative) growth that, due to our overriding dependency on semiconductors, now impacts greatly on the developed world.

From the Editor
When in Rome
I have a confession to make. I've always wanted to be a travel writer. So far, thanks to my job as an editor of a semiconductor trade publication, I've become a writer who travels. I was thinking I could combine all these skills and write a blog, "The Business Traveler's Guide to Silicon Destinations". I've already been to Silicon Valley, in San Jose, and Silicon Desert, in Chandler, AZ. Recent travels took me to Silicon Gorge, the Bristol-Bath region of the UK.

SiP Seminar to Address Design Issues
(May 19, 2008) Cambridge, UK — The National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) and TWI will hold the third in a series of annual one-day seminars addressing System-in-Package (SiP) trends, technologies, and applications at TWI, Granta Park, Cambridge, June 3, 2008. The program focuses on Design for SiP, a topic that has been long recognized as one of the key barriers to SiP adoption. Jan Vardemann, of Techsearch International, will deliver the keynote in SiP design and applications.

IC Packagers' China Investment Proposals Approved
(May 16, 2008) Taipei, TAIWAN — Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has approved proposals by IC packaging and testing companies PowerTech Technology Inc., and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. to expand their investment in China after deciding the companies met the conditions set for investment in China by the ministry's Investment Commission.

Names in the News
(May 15, 2008) — It's been a busy month for human resources departments across the industry supply chain as sales forces are beefed up, management promotions and changes occur, and award recipients are announced. Here's a round-up of the latest companies with their names in the news.

EoPlex to Manufacture Innovative Cell Phone Antennas
(May 15, 2008) Redwood City, CA — EoPlex Technologies disclosed $4M additional funding to build its first full-scale production plant for the manufacture of state-of-the-art cell phone antennas. The company had previously announced its Series C funding of $8M in 2007.
