Francisco Acquires Universal, Vitronics-Soltec, Hover-Davis
(August 30, 2006) BINGHAMTON, NY — Francisco Partners, a private equity firm, signed a definitive agreement with Dover Technologies International, a subsidiary of Dover Corporation, to acquire Universal Instruments Corporation. Under the agreement, Vitronics Soltec and Hover-Davis, Inc. will also be acquired by Francisco Partners and will operate as independent companies.

Magnetometer Designed on MEMS Chip
(August 30, 2006) LITTLE FALLS, NJ — A prototype magnetometer that could improve perimeter control in war zones and border control for various military organizations is currently under development at the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium's Laboratory, Murray Hill, NJ. The prototype, developed by mPhase Technologies, accurately locates a metal object more than 30 ft. away, using a MEMS device to sense changes in magnetic fields.

ASE Enters Medical Electronics Sector
(August 29, 2006) SANTA CLARA, CA — Medtronic Inc. selected Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE), a packaging and test company, as its IC services partner to produce a range of devices used in medical implantable pacemaker and defibrillator devices.

Partnership Examines Design-to-test
(August 28, 2006) PORTLAND, OR — Test Systems Strategies partnered with Toshiba Microelectronics Corp. and ATE Service Corp. to create design-to-test development flows. The partnership will focus on creating development flows that allow design teams to achieve full test program generation and validation before device tape-outs.

(August 28, 2006) HOUSTON — BP Microsystems, a device programming systems supplier, will change its company name to BPM Microsystems. After 21 years, the company decided to change its name, citing confusion with a Houston-based oil company BP Amoco.

(August 28, 2006) FREEMONT, CA Dage Precision Industries, Inc., appointed Kimbela Randle to eastern regional sales manager. Randle has worked for more than 10 years with X-ray inspection systems in the SMT, semiconductor, and medical fields.

Haier IC Adopts Simulator for IC Design

(August 25, 2006) VAN NUYS, CA — Trio-Tech International will expand its Suzhou, China, facility to include specialized testing and burn-in services, and will manufacture burn-in equipment for China's backend semiconductor market. The facility will be completed in Q'04 2006.

Wilf Corrigan Keynotes at IWLPC

Corrigan, founder of Milpitas, Calif.-based LSI Logic, will keynote the International Wafer-level Packaging Conference (IWLPC) November 2, 2006, at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose, CA. Former president, chairman, and CEO of Fairchild Camera & Instrument Corp., Corrigan is considered an integral member of Silicon Valley's history.
