Ultratech Appoints VP of Sales for North America, Europe (June 09, 2005) San Jose, Calif. — Ultratech Inc. has named Peter Shamshoian as its new VP of sales for North America and Europe. Having over two decades of semiconductor-industry experience, Shamshoian will report directly to Rick Friedman, senior VP of worldwide sales and marketing, in his new role.
SIA Forecasts 6% Growth for Global Semiconductor Sales (June 08, 2005) San Jose, Calif. — The Semiconductor Industry Association's (SIA) revised forecast projects that worldwide sales of semiconductors will grow 6% in 2005 to $226 billion. In the November 2004 forecast, the SIA had projected that 2005 sales would be essentially flat with 2004's $213 billion sales level. The new forecast also projects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8% through 2008, and also projects that global chip sales will reach $309 billion in 2008.
ChipMOS Signs NT$1B Syndicated Loan Agreement (June 07, 2005) Hsinchu, Taiwan — ChipMOS Technologies Ltd.'s 70.3% owned subsidiary, ChipMOS Taiwan, has signed a syndicated loan agreement with a bank syndicate consisting of six local banks in Taiwan. S.J. Cheng, ChipMOS chairman and CEO, along with representatives from the bank syndicate, were present at the signing ceremony in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
ASAT, LSI Logic Join Forces in Flip Chip Agreement (June 06, 2005) Hong Kong and Pleasanton, Calif. — ASAT Holdings Limited and LSI Logic Corp. have entered into a multi-year cross-licensing agreement, under which LSI Logic will provide ASAT with a license to use its flip chip semiconductor package assembly technology. LSI Logic also will certify ASAT's assembly process using copper/low-k technology.
Amkor Relocates Corporate Headquarters to Arizona Facility (June 03, 2005) Chandler, Ariz. — Amkor Technology Inc. has moved its corporate headquarters, originally based in West Chester, Pa., to its Chandler, Ariz. facility. Having established the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) industry in 1968, Amkor first became present in the greater Phoenix area in 1984, and since that time, Amkor has focused its corporate executive staff, product management, engineering support, and business development teams at its Chandler location.
Baolab Selects Coventor 3-D Micro-emulation Tool (June 02, 2005) Cary, N.C. — Baolab MicroSystems has picked Coventor Inc.'s 3-D micro-emulation tool, MEMulator, to verify its design in the pre-fabrication stage. MEMulator provides realistic 3-D design-rule checks visualization and mechanical connection color scheming to check for etch and connection errors before foundry processes. Baolab has incorporated MEMulator into its design process to catch errors and reduce fabrication runs.
Carsem to Double Test Operation Size in Malaysia (June 01, 2005) Scotts Valley, Calif. — Carsem is expanding its test services operation manufacturing space at the S-Site facility from 40,000 sq. ft. to 96,000 sq. ft. by the end of 2005. Together with the current 14,000 sq. ft. test operation at the M-site facility, this will bring the total area for wafer-probe and final test services to 110,000 sq. ft.

April Global Semiconductor Sales Slightly Lose Pace (May 31, 2005) San Jose, Calif. — Worldwide semiconductor sales declined slightly in April to $18.2 billion, 1.2% from $18.4 billion in March, reports the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). However, April sales were up 6.9% from $17.0 billion in April 2004, and the SIA notes that April is typically a strong month for semiconductor sales.
