North American Semiconductor Industry Posts January 2003 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.92 SAN JOSE, CALIF. The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $742 million in orders in January 2003 (three-month average basis) and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.92, according to the January 2003 Express Report published by SEMI. SoC vs. SiP -- Heavyweight Division Some catchy headlines around the semiconductor industry recently had Intel announcing the death of the system-on-a-chip. The significant drawbacks to SoC have been discussed thoroughly -- especially by suppliers of system-in-a-package products -- but it was definitely newsworthy that the leading chipmaker expressed that point of view. A Flurry of MEMS After what seemed like a lull in MEMS-related news, last week I saw an interesting announcement that was an indication of another step forward for the very promising but still immature industry. As if on cue, several other such pieces of MEMS news came across my screen, confirming that we might be starting an actual trend. (February 21)

SEMI Reports Fourth Quarter Silicon Wafer Area Shipments SAN JOSE, CALIF. Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments increased by 19 percent in 2002 when compared to 2001 area shipments, according to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry.
