HID Corp. Acquires Card and Reader Business From Dorado IRVINE, CALIF. HID Corporation, an ASSA ABLOY Group company, has acquired the card and reader business of Dorado Products Inc. The acquisition was finalized on April 16, 2003. (April 24)

THOUGHTS ON THE NEWS
Convergence Via Another Path Wafer-level packaging isn't the only game in town when it comes to the much-publicized "convergence" of packaging and wafer fabrication. A recent joint announcement by packaging sub-contractor ASE and wafer foundry TSMC shows that there are other ways for that wall between the front- and back-ends of the industry to be scaled. (April 21)

Newport Invests in NEXX Systems IRVINE, CALIF. WILMINGTON, MASS. Newport Corp. has invested $3.5 million to acquire 19.9 percent of NEXX Systems Inc., a privately owned developer and manufacturer of flip chip processing equipment for back-end semiconductor manufacturing. THOUGHTS ON THE NEWS
Nowhere to Go But Up SEMI just announced the final results for semiconductor equipment sales in 2002. The bad news is that the industry lost another 30 percent of its revenue in 2002, after dropping by 41 percent from 2000 to 2001. The industry is now about two-fifths of what it was just two years ago. (April 18)
