THOUGHTS ON THE NEWS
It's Up To Us! The latest analysis from research firm Investec says that "consumer electronics is likely to be a driver of semiconductor demand in 4Q02," and that "communications infrastructure is likely to be weak for the next several years." Several years is a long, long time in this industry, so it looks like it's up to us -- the consumer -- to save the industry, at least for now. (October 11)

THE WEEKLY WRAP FROM WAFERNEWS
IC Insights: Electronic System Sales to Drop, IC Shipments to Rebound in 2002 IC Insights, Scottsdale, AZ, has released its 2002 Mid-Year Report, in which analyst Bill McClean reports that while electronic system sales are predicted to fall again in 2002, IC unit volume shipments will rebound to show a 19% increase. (October 10)

Great Mix at Fabless Suppliers Expo The Fabless Semiconductor Association's Suppliers Expo held last week in Santa Clara was a nifty collection of fabless IC companies, design tool suppliers, wafer foundries, packaging and test sub-contractors, and other companies involved in the complex semiconductor design and manufacturing supply chain. (October 9)

U.K. REPORT
U.K. Companies Find Packaging Niches LONDON The United Kingdom is not known as a critical location for semiconductor packaging, but there are numerous companies doing some interesting work there. On a recent vacation to the U.K., I took the opportunity to visit a few places: assembly and test subcontractor Atlantic Technology, equipment manufacturer DEK, and test and inspection specialist Dage Precision Industries. (October 8)

SEMI's Award Winners SEMI's annual dinner and award ceremony had much to offer the hundreds of people who attended the event last week. Primarily, the winners represented some of the less glamorous parts of the industry, showing people that you don't have to be a high-profile headline-maker to get noticed. (October 7)
