MEMS Forecast: Consumer Applications Drive Steady Growth

(January 30, 2008) PARIS — The latest market research released by Yole Développment forecasts a healthy future for the MEMS market, driven by primarily by consumer applications. Automotive applications will continue to fuel the market, as well as medical and life science, aeronautics, defense, industrial, and telecom. Hewlett Packard leads the pack of MEMS manufacturers, reporting $850M in 2007. Yole predicts that 2008 could be the first year when a MEMS manufacturer will reach $1B sales.

"Nine companies are above $200M sales, compared to only 4 companies 2 years ago. Analog Devices is a newcomer, boosted by MEMS accelerometers and a demand for consumer applications." states Jean Christophe Eloy, CEO, Yole Développment. "Only 2 companies are expected to decline in sales in 2007. Apart from Texas Instruments, Lexmark is reporting a slight global decrease in 2007. The inkjet head company has not unveiled innovation for years, thus giving more room for its competitors."

According to the report, the MEMS market is expected to double from 7.1B in 2007 to $14B by 2012, representing a CAGR of 14% for that period. Growth will begin at modest pace and strengthen after 2010.

In 2007, 2BMEMS units were reportedly produced, with another 2.5B expected in 2008. By 2012, Yole predicts that 6.7B MEMS devices will be shipped worldwide. After 2009, RF MEMS and Si microphones will account for 45% of MEMS devices being produced.

The sales of the top 30 companies is growing at a lower rate compared to the MEMS industry (7% compared to 9%), signifying a strong vitality of the small and medium players. Global TOP 30 sales are estimated to reach $5.6B representing about 80% of the global MEMS market.

"The new entrant in the TOP 30 is FLIR Systems, worldwide leader of uncooled microbolometer based on MEMS technologies. It reaches the 26th rank of our 2007 Preliminary TOP 30 MEMS manufacturers. And one company is leaving the TOP 30 MEMS ranking, it is Kionix, manufacturer of accelerometers and gyros," said Jérôme Mouly, market analyst at Yole Développement, in charge of TOP 30 MEMS.
