(December 17, 2007) TAIPEI, Taiwan In line with the increasing use of LED backlight modules in display applications, Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. (CPT) reportedly plans to step into upstream LED manufacturing, according to industry sources, reported CENS. CPT reportedly plans to have its affiliated Sintronic Technology Inc. take charge of LED packaging, and San Chih Semiconductor Co., Ltd. will be responsible for LED epitaxy.
CPT's move is not a surprise to the local TFT-LCD industry, as most major players have begun deployments in the LED business.
According to CPT, LED backlights are increasingly applied to small and medium-sized panel products. In 2008, the company said, the penetration ratio of LED backlighting in small/medium-sized panel market is expected to grow to over 80% from about 60% to 70% currently.
This year, CPT expects to ship about 48 million small-sized and 12.6 million medium-sized panels. Almost all small/medium-sized panels are adopting LED backlighting, making such new lighting source a key factor for cost and key-technology control by panel suppliers.
Each medium-sized TFT-LCD panel uses 12 to 20 LEDs in backlighting, CPT said, implying that CPT would have an annual demand for at least 200 million LEDs used in backlight modules in 2008.
