Author Guidelines for Advanced Packaging Magazine

As the premier technology source for advanced IC packaging, Advanced Packaging Magazine is dedicated to uncovering the latest research and technology for our global audience. We strive to help engineers and decision-makers in the packaging industry excel at their jobs by offering a unique mix of cutting-edge processes and new technology initiatives. We do this by focusing on materials, design, assembly and reliability and by encouraging industry-wide peer collaboration.

Articles Appropriate for Publication

Manuscripts are considered for publication if they contain original and new information in the design and fabrication of advanced electronic component packaging. Feature articles should discuss a significant advance in technology (not a specific product) or a solution to a problem in the industry.

Original Work: Your manuscript must be originally written for this publication and contain significant material not previously published. Once a manuscript is accepted, all authors will be asked to sign a standard copyright form.

All Articles Are Reviewed: Advanced Packaging Magazine will publish technical feature articles if they meet the scientific criteria set forth by the magazine. This generally means substantiating all claims with good scientific data, eliminating all marketing language, offering practical application information and providing solutions to technological challenges. It is not unusual for our reviewers to ask questions or offer suggestions to strengthen articles, so authors are encouraged to submit articles early to ensure a smooth process. Only after a manuscript is accepted is it slotted into an upcoming issue of the magazine.

How to Submit an Article

Save the text document by itself in Microsoft Word. Please do not include (embed) any graphic elements in this word document. Please include a title, short abstract and complete contact information. Turn off all auto-formatting functions, such as auto bullets or references (but do include references, as they are used to support your information and claims, thereby lending credibility to your paper). Authors should target to write approximately 1,500 to 2,500 words and include 3 graphics for a feature article. Columns are generally 750 to 800 words.

Tables should be prepared using single tabs between material and be placed at the end of the manuscript, not within the body of the paper. Avoid using the table function in Word whenever possible.

E-mail your submissions to AP's Associate Editor, Françoise von Trapp francoise@pennwell.com.

Some Tips from the Editors

  • Please spell out all acronyms on the first reference. For example: ball grid array (BGA).
  • Avoid all commercialism and marketing language.
  • Manuscripts are edited to conform to house style. Authors will receive an edited version of their manuscript via e-mail so the author(s) can review the manuscript and suggest author corrections (only within a specified timeframe). We reserve the right to accept and/or deny these changes.
  • We encourage authors to contact us during any stage of writing an article – we are here to help you through the process.

It Is Critical to Follow Our Graphic Guidelines

  • First, please DO NOT embed any graphics in the Word document.
  • Images sent must have a resolution of at least 300 pixels per inch.
  • Electronic graphics must be saved as individual files. Please submit them via e-mail.
  • Laser printouts, color copies and PDFs cannot be printed in the magazine, so only include these to show us what you are submitting on a disk.

Specifications for Magazine Covers

If you wish to submit a cover photo to be considered with an article for an upcoming issue of our magazine, please consider these criteria:

  1. Focus on one central subject. Close-ups are dramatic with high impact. Avoid product shots.
  2. An active shot is preferred to a static one because the eye is attracted to movement.
  3. Images must be vertical in orientation or be capable of being cropped vertically and have 300dpi resolution and a 8x10 print size. Acceptable file formats are .jpg, .tif and .eps. Send your work in a zipped file or CD-ROM.
  4. A cover photo must not be used in past or future ads for your company, nor in any other publication.
  5. The image should illustrate the editorial focus of the article in which it is representing. If possible, it should add technical information (e.g., cross-section micrograph, design details, material characteristics, etc.) if it can be done in a visually appealing way.
  6. Captions and photo courtesy lines must be included.
  7. Several shots of the same subject give editors a choice to suit any preference.
  8. Permission to use the photograph must be granted in advance.
  9. Some photographs that do not meet all these criteria may still be excellent cover material, so please do not hesitate to send submissions for consideration.
